The CARE-Gleitsman Scholars Program emphasizes the critical role of diversity, inclusivity, and equity within the academic medicine workforce, particularly in eliminating disparities in cancer care. This program offers a mentored research experience in palliative care and supportive oncology at the University of Pittsburgh to first-year medical students from one of 8 partnering institutions. 

Building upon the tradition of the Gleitsman Student Diversity in Palliative Care Research Award, the Palliative Research Center (PaRC) is pleased to introduce this year’s program, supported by UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, and the Section of Palliative Care and Medical Ethics and Institute for Clinical Research Education (ICRE) at the University of Pittsburgh.

  • The program runs for an 8-week period from early June to early August 2024. 
  • This program involves in-person activities, including orientation, in Pittsburgh, PA with the option for hybrid or remote work for the remainder of the program. Funds for travel to/from and lodging in Pittsburgh are provided by the program. 
  • Scholars are paired with a faculty research mentor from PaRC, the Section of Palliative Care and Medical Ethics at the University of Pittsburgh, or UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and dedicate 40 hours per week during the program period to their research mentor’s project and research skill development.
  • Scholars are paired with a career mentor and participate in career development activities.
  • Each scholar receives a one-time award of $4,000.  

Applicants must be (all criteria must apply):

  • First year medical students currently enrolled at one of the following schools:
    • Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science
    • Howard University
    • Meharry Medical College
    • Morehouse School of Medicine
    • Ponce Health Sciences University School of Medicine
    • San Juan Bautista School of Medicine
    • University of Hawai’i at Mānoa
    • University of Puerto Rico – Medical Sciences Campus
  • Students able to commit 40 hours a week for 8 weeks, from early June to early August.
  • Current U.S. residents.
