(August 3rd, 2023) A recent article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) by Dr. Robert Arnold, Dr. Jacqueline Kruser (University of Wisconsin), and Dr. Justin T. Clapp (University of Pennsylvania) has garnered widespread attention. The article addresses the implications of the using the word “need” in discussions of patient status, and the pressure it puts on patients and family members to choose particular interventions over others.
